Two children left without a mother because of a weekend slaying have found a home with their grandmother - at least for now.

William Kirby, Franklin County Juvenile Court magistrate, awarded Bonnie Moore temporary custody of her grandchildren - 8-year-old Elaine Hearld and 8-month-old Frank Hearld.

The children's mother, Julia Hearld, 33, was found dead in her 308 Stanaford Place home Sunday night. Police are investigating the death as a homicide.

Her infant son had been in the apartment with her body for as long as two days.

Hearld was last seen Friday morning, said next-door neighbor Mary Paul.

Moore, who was watching granddaughter Elaine for the weekend, called police Sunday after not hearing from her daughter for two days.

''Her mom was concerned that she had disappeared,'' said Columbus police detective Mike McCann.

McCann said police looked through the windows of the house and saw Julia Hearld's body. Police have declined to say how she died.

The television was still on and the baby was found uninjured, Paul said.

The little boy, however, was suffering from dehydration, said a family member who asked not to be identified.

Frank was listed last night in fair condition at Children's Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Pam Barber said.

Julia Hearld, who was unemployed, had recently watched her son learn to crawl and get around their home in his walker, her friend Sandy Rice said

Hearld was a single mother and her two children had different fathers. Problems with the father of Frank had left Hearld on edge and police had been to her home several times for domestic problems, Rice said.

The court will be trying to contact both men to let them know that temporary custody of the children has been awarded to the grandmother. The fathers can apply for custody at that time, said Melissa Mitchell, general counsel for Franklin County Children Services.

''The only way that (the grandmother) can ensure permanent custody . . . is to adopt them,'' Mitchell said, adding that the adoption process is long and confusing. ''It's entirely possible that a dad will surface.''

A memorial service for Hearld will be held 7 p.m. Friday at Cook & Son-Pallay Funeral Home, 1631 Parsons Ave. There will be no visitation.

McCann said there are no suspects in Hearld's death.

The earliest story I have about him is that, during Prohibition, he and his dad made home brew in dad's basement at 515 S. 4th Street. When it was about ready, his Uncle Rudy Morbitzer would sneak in and steal some of it. Father and son had to build a locked stall around the barrels. 'Herbie' worked for the Gas Co., then, in the late 1930's, got his own dry cleaners business in the Southern Hotel Building, which he ran until retiring. One summer I worked for him, driving the delivery truck and hanging ads on doorknobs. He would sometimes take me with him over on Town Street to the (Fraternal Order of) Eagle's for lunch. The daily special cost 20¢ - tap beer was a nickel.


He married divorcée Frances Hughes Logan in 1936. She had a beauty shop just a couple of blocks east of the cleaners. They kept her name (Frances Hughes) on the shop until retiring. About 1921, Frances had had a daughter, Margaret Logan (Casbarro) (McNulty) who inherited a jewelry store in Lancaster, Ohio. The store had been established by her first husband, Nicholas 'Tic' Casbarro, who was rumored to have had family links to the underworld and that he 'went legit'. (Unconfirmed). Herb and Frances had no children.

Herbie served as a soldier in WW II but did not see combat. A couple of years after the war he bought one of the then-popular canopied boats that had surplus aircraft drop-tanks for pontoons. It made a dandy stable platform for fishing and/or small parties, and he ran it for several years on Buckeye Lake. They had a cottage there that had belonged to his father. In the garage was a refrigerator that was modified to hold a keg of beer with a spigot on the outside. Good thinking.
Frances died in 1979 and Herbert in 1981.
